Promises (Psalm 13)

Labels

I really dislike the term Christian Music.

It’s so nondescript.

What makes something Christian? Is it a song that plays on K-LOVE or something written by a Christian?

It doesn’t mean anything.

Hymn is a much better word.  It means a song or ode in praise or honor of God.  Worship song or sacred music are both okay terms as well.

I’ve personally stopped calling my church/spiritual/worship tunes those things and have labeled them prayers.

A prayer is a conversation. The songs I’m writing are a reflection of real and honest emotion in communication with a person, Jesus.

Heart of David

I love to base songs on scripture. Sometimes I quote scriptures verbatim.

David is my favorite reference source. He understood how to breakthrough difficult situations. He didn’t pretend like everything was rosy and life was great all the time.  He openly acknowledged the challenges that were in front of him and he sang to God about them in a very candid conversational way.  Then he would often recount how God had blessed him in the past.

My favorite part of Psalm 13 is when he said, “I will sing to the Lord because he has dealt bountifully with me”.

I know stuff sucks but God’s plan is for you to not only get through the situation you’re struggling with–it’s for us to be champions.

Psalm 13 (ESV)

How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
because he has dealt bountifully with me.

Lyrics

Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face?
I’ve been wrestling with sorrow
In my doubt, I turn to heaven

You always keep your promises and you are
Who you say you are

Give light to my eyes
Or I will sleep in death
Answer me, Lord my God
I’m desperate for your presence

You always keep your promises and you are
Who you say you are

You love the hopeless
You love impossible
Your love is unfailing
And you restore what was lost
You take our broken hearts
And sow them back together

You’re always
Always
Always good
