The Creative Engine

Somewhere between dawn and dusk I had a dream. I don’t often remember my dreams but this one was vivid. I was on stage performing with Dave Grohl. We were in a small stadium and the dream was in black and white for some reason. It was loud. Before my subconscious could argue with the reasonableness of this magnificent moment, I woke up.

Most dreams are like this. We have aspirations but then the slow drip of reality, like a strong espresso, jolts us back to the practicality of existence.

Reality is not the enemy though! I read in a book somewhere, maybe it was Viktor Frankl’s amazing account in Man’s Search for Meaning, that seeing reality clearly is mental health. In this autobiographical work, Frankl documents his time as a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. He said, “Mental health is based on a certain degree of tension, the tension between what one has already achieved and what one still ought to accomplish”

Dreaming and art go hand in hand. Art is our dreams made manifest–imperfect and beautiful.

We need more art in the world and dreaming…

Of a better place

A more just existence

Beauty

Spinning new realities

…is the beginning. It’s a state of hope that we have to tap into in order to create. Optimism is just a system of hope.

There is a saying in Brazil: Um tolo em movimento caminha mais do que um sábio sentado.

It means, A fool in motion walks further than a wise man sitting down.

It’s about process, not perfection. And it all starts with taking action on a dream.

This is the creative engine. This is how you change your life.
